[Interview] William Wei: I Thought Of Giving Up Because I'm Giving In For My Music Album

It's been a long time since we last translated an interview article. When we first read this article, we felt that this article should really be read by his fans. It is just like a letter to his fans, revealing his real feeling after becoming a singer.

This seems to be an exclusive interview by UDN News. We tried our best to translate as close as the meaning written in the article, please pardon us if there's any grammar mistakes here. Here's the translation.

My First Time

From a student to a singer, I knew that there will be a period of adaptation in between. However, during the process, I once doubted myself, "Why am I here? Am I not here for singing?"
The first time for the thoughts of going back (to the past) appear on my head was when I was preparing for the "Through my lenses" concert, I had to prepare for the concert, perform overseas as well as promote my new album at the same time. I thought, you should be giving me more time in order to do it well. I was exhausted being demanded to multitask, and thought that I'm not suitable to this industry as I have low resistance to stress, I used to sleep early and wake up early, I feel tired very easily.

I was depressed. I endured it when I'm outside, at most I showed an unhappy face. But I started to throw things (to vent anger) when I was at home. However, I only throw things that don't break, to ensure I won't damage anything and hurting myself.

I felt really upset when I have to answer questions like "Who is the goddess in your heart?" just for the purpose of having a news during (album) promotions. I thought it's totally irrelevant to my music. I gave in during the promotions of my debut album and the movie "The Bird who Saves the World". Even when I was doing national service in military, I was assigned to performed in a variety show, which required me to play games in front of a temple, I gave in as well. I know that this is part of my job, and I have to do it but I don't feel comfortable with it.

I knew that it is not gonna be limited to only singing before I became a singer, so I picked them up slowly after I enter the industry. Giving in is just the first step of growing up. At the end of the day, I have to adjust my mentality, find my own way out, looking at seniors as examples, Fan Fan (Fan Wei Qi) is my model of reference.

For example, I didn't really want to dance in the concert, and I am rebellious, I will never do it if someone is forcing me. What happened in the concert this year is really a special exception. I gave in contradictory for the reason of: This is my job, this has effects (to the audience), the fans love it.

Fortunately, the company protects me, they have never over challenge my bottom line. I had acted in a movie, sang, and danced. Acting is something I'm willing to improve, however I do not wish dancing to become a regular thing to me.

[Interview] William Wei, Return to Simplicity

(Marie Claire #227, Mar 2012)

With his guitar on, William Wei sings smoothly. On the other hand, he is shy and introvert in private. Ideas keep running through his mind back and forth. His green life is on the track. He knows better than anyone else that what is needed and wanted outside the music world.

In the spacious office of a record company, William Wei came shyly and greeted us. Other than his upcoming full-length movie "The Bird Who Saved The World", he surely is the new prince of love songs of our generation. However, you won't see a thing the prince should have that had added on him.

Cotton T-shirt, simple black backpack, an olive folding umbrella, a pair of worn Nike's. Reminding us of the scientists with glasses and messy hair that keep working and doing experiments, even not having meals and rests, just to achieve satisfying results. He smiled bashfully and told us he really is a homebody; Practicing his guitar, learning how to cook, reading, listening to music. Let's put him as an artistic person, whereas he is so down-to-earth that not the kind of pretentious guy staying in a cafe all day long.

I was stunned when he took out his mobile phone. The colour of the phone fell off and the model is so old that I can’t even recall the name. He said, he doesn’t need a smartphone, as long as the phone is sufficient for a phone call and texts. As for the functions of recording a note, he likes to write the page full on the notebook. “I think a lot before I buy anything, I will keep asking myself what I truly need.”

Clarifying the real needs in life is also part of composing. “I used to think that inspiration comes naturally. However, now music becomes my job, it becomes everyday works for me. I also experienced anxiety when I can’t compose anything for 1 or 2 months. I started to think that I had reach an end of my talent. Then, I read a book titled “Writting Better Lyrics” by Pat Pattson, a professor of music. Now I spent 10 minutes to compose everyday to get myself familiarised with it. William Wei has his very own opinion on musics. He practise a lot and he will also find solutions in books. “Recently I read about Kenny Werner’s, a Jazz pianist, book with title “Effortless Mastery”, musician shouldn’t emphasize too much on whether they make any mistake or how great they can do in a performance, because this is limiting themselves. This theory has helped me much.

He is an ordinary homely person, and weird at the same time. He is bigotry at times. When he can’t write anything out, the first place he will go is second-hand CD shop. “When I don’t have any output, I will go and search for input. Besides from the book, internet, I will also buy CD from CD shop, when you put your CD in a CD player, it’s really different from what you can hear from iTunes. My recent dream is to purchase a CD player (again).”

“Back to Simplicity” of modern living is just like girls go to flea market to buy second-hand clothings. “The second-hand cd shops or book shops are just like a game space, you will never know what people will be sharing, what kind of treasure you will get from here. This is the fun of being passive. Although it’s unknown ahead, but you may be getting very good stuffs, this is very different from those “aggressive promotion” in a book shop.”

He started to make selection (of cd) in the CD shop, forgetting he was still doing a photo shooting. He said excitedly that he found “寶島康樂隊” (taiwanese band)’s old album. Suddenly, William Wei seemed like he fell into Albert Einstein’s crazy time travel of E=mc2, but the weird stubbornness and special talents, is only known by him.

1) Guitar
My first guitar in life. I was in my High School first year. One day, I saw this guitar and a beginner book for learning guitar named “At Your Fingertips”. After that I found out it was a gift of love from my father. I was trying to play a chord, however I failed to play because I was unfamiliar with the finger positions. My father grab it over and play an english classic songs very smoothly, and said, “It’s not difficult!”, he really likes to show off. The Cost Performance Index for this guitar is very high as he used it to compose almost every songs in his debut album until he bought a new guitar as an investment for live house performance before the releasing of album. He still treasure this guitar very much as it had accompanied him in various memorable moment and events.

2) Black Tangerine (David Tao’s album)
An album I listened to during my secondary and high school time. It’s very critical. After listening to this, I found out that even Chinese music can be critical to current affairs. Actually it’s very easy to criticise something now. Chris Martin from Coldplay said: “On the Internet, everybody hates everything” I want to change the word “hate” to “know”, now everybody on internet seems to know everything.

3) Kindle reader
Saw it during my university gathering because one of my fellow classmate of university bought it and I bought it as well for it’s good quality. Why not other tablet? Kindle uses very different material, it uses E-Ink, we can only read it with external source of light. You will feel like you’re reading on paper. My eyes get tired very easily so it suits me well.

4) IPod Touch
I like it for it has many music related APP, such as Garage Band, a very simple application that I always use. All I have to do is to create a few tracks of drum, guitar, vocal to make a song.

5) Diary /Note Book
A habit of mine since I was in Junior High School. As I’m not good in memorizing, especially when I went to University and when I start to work, the diary book became very important. I am someone who likes to do planning, regardless of practising guitar, singing, buying vegetables, I will always give myself a deadline. My mood will be affected if my plans are messed up.

6) “The Great Liar”
It a treasure from second-hand shop. This novel is based on the analysis of current news, which critics the ecology of media at the time of the novel created. As there isn’t any specific temporal logic, I can jump in to read the story anytime. I became a reading material for my toilet time.

7) Kitchen (Home)
I always stay in the kitchen when I feel frustrated. Many inspirations come from this place. From here I get to understand women’s feeling. Aren’t inspiration come from daily life? Sweeping the floor, cooking. Oh.. Recently I read an e-book on Kindle called “5-Minute Recipe”, it’s good for people who rent a suite room.

[MV] 還是愛著你 Still Loving You

Chines Lyrics

[Interview Translation] Someone is Waiting Evening Concerts (Taipei)

The conversation between the MC (Ah Guan) and our naturally shy Weibird is really funny.

As subtitles requires more time. Here's the text translation first. Hope you enjoy ^^

-------------------------------------------------

MC: Say Hi to the crowd of fans
Wei: Hi, crowd of fans (lol)

MC: You're very cruel. You have a song named "Keep Waiting", and you really kept the fans waiting. This time you made them wait for you for more than 2 years.

Wei: Yeah. Even myself can't wait anymore. (lol)

MC: But your new album [Someone is Waiting] is finally confirmed. What kind of story you wanna tell in your new album? [We'll Never Know] seems to have some connection with [Have You Ever].

Wei: [We'll Never Know] has some connection with [Have You Ever]. Both songs are referring to the same story. But the angles are different. [Have You Ever] is the immediate feelings (miserable feelings) while [We'll Never Know] is about the feelings when I looked back a few months later. [Have You Ever] is more about sensibility while [We'll Never Know] is a reflection of rationality.

MC: It's like you've gotten over it. (referring to We'll Never Know) It's like saying if the girl in the story has made another choice, the ending might be different, We'll Never Know. You said that this is an evening concert but the sky is still very bright now. Summer has long days. Does it really give the feel of evening?

Wei: What to do?

MC: How are you going to solve this?

Wei: Then I will sing until the feeling is right. (Scream from the audience)

MC: Or you want to sing until sunset?

Wei: (Hesitate) Whoa.. until sunset is good. It will be too long until the sky turn dark.

MC: It's alright. We shall wait here with you.
(Ask the audience) Are you willing to wait with Weibird?

Audience: Yes!

MC: They said yes. Have you prepared enough songs?

Wei: ah… (Thinking seriously) lol

MC: We have live band here, so we can sing until tomorrow's evening.

Wei: … (laugh embarassingly)

MC: Are you still feeling nervous facing the medias and fan now after log out from army a year ago?

Wei: It's kind of unfamiliar to me. I'm feeling I'm still a new comer.

MC: Really?

Wei: Because I went for National Service in just 6 months after my first album released. I feel kinda unfamiliar with all these things now.

MC: It's alright. We watched you growing up. (emphasize) It's me.

Wei: oh… No.. no.. (Said it in a way that he felt honored)

MC: I have confidence in your new album.

Wei: Thanks.

MC: The main concept of the new album is about the "Ambiguous" stories and feelings in a boy-girl relationship?

Wei: eh… (showing an expression of ambiguity then smile) is this answer ambiguous?

MC: Hmmm (lol)

Wei: The main concept is about "ambiguity" but not limited to only love, but also on music and lyrics.

MC: Weibird is someone who is good at magnify those small feelings, it's especially essential for a song composer. Even when you are writing about common things in life, but it still requires imagination. Heard that you will put yourself into a situation like you are in a drama when you are writing a song.. (lol)

Wei: Not really.. but I will immerse myself into that kind of feelings.

MC: So it's like when the song writing mode is switched on, the drama will starts inside your heart (LOL)

Wei: Yes. When I finished writing and looked at it, I will be like "eh..What did I write?" (LOL) Why.. What happened? (Shake his head)

MC: I would like to ask on behalf your fan girls. Is there anyone that you would like to have ambiguous relationship with?

Wei: No. Cannot. (LOL)

MC: No? Cannot?? Can you be a bit wild? I will switch on your song writing mode now.

Wei: (Laugh)

MC: Imagine you are in a drama, is there anyone you want to roll on the grass with? (LOL)

Wei: (Shocked and shy)

MC: Or is there anyone who's a goddess to you?

Wei: I can't roll on the grass with my goddess. (Audience laugh) Goddess is someone we can only look from far.

MC: Then is there anyone you want to take a stroll on the cloud with?

Wei: Guanyin Buddha (big laugh)

MC: It's too holy. (LOL) She is a buddha, do you have someone (as in human)?

Wei: I know what you want me to say. We had set it. (LOL)

MC: We set it. You can say my name.

Wei: Oh.. Ah Guan.. (MC's name) But no need to roll on the grass..

MC: I want to roll with you (LOL)

Wei: We can go on the cloud (LOL)

MC: ok.

Wei: My colleague asked me whether I admire someone who may seem to be goddess to the audience.

MC: Who else besides me?

Wei: I think Chang Chun-ning Janine is not bad.

MC: Oh..

Wei: There's boos… Sorry.. I will change to someone else (LOL)

MC: Nonono.. (Laugh) Anyone else besides Janine? 2nd Choice.

Wei: Anne Hathaway. But she is really far away..

MC: and she's already got a fiancé.. (Weibird acts disappointed here) Anyone else? Is there a 3rd choice?

Wei: What?? What exactly you want?? (laugh shyly and said)

MC: Just want to know what kind of girl will attract talented guy like you.

Wei: (Thinking seriously) Very difficult choice.

MC: Really hard to choose. Do you like someone's wife? Fan Wei Qi? (LOL)

Wei: (Laugh) I think that girlfriend is someone who you have feelings with and get along with. But Goddess is someone who you can only watch from far.

MC: So goddess is supposed to be on the cloud, but girlfriend is someone you can roll on the grass with.

Wei: (Laugh embarassed again) No rolling..

MC: ok.. I will stop making fun of you now.. Heard that you have prepared a number of nice songs today. You feel easier when you are singing.

Wei: Yes. Please stop asking~

MC: Stop asking him. Let reporters take a picture of him.

[NEWS] Being shot by the official photographer of Iwai Shunji (Japanese Movie Director), Weibird: I am graced!

[NEWS] Being shot by the official photographer of Iwai Shunji (Japanese Movie Director), Weibird: I am graced!

Ivy Chen, the official photographer of Iwai Shunji, was the photographer for Weibird's photo shoot in his new album [Someone is Waiting]. He joked that he felt himself was having the same grade as Yu Aoi (Japanese Actress), he is grateful that the photographer has "graced" him.

The first hit of Weibird's second album [Someone is Waiting], "We'll Never Know" was being officially broadcasted on 11 July. In the pre-order poster, he looked extremely natural with his sleeping pose. Fans asked: "Is he very tired?". The truth, however, was that the photographer has made Weibird to totally relax when doing the photo shoot. There is even almost no photo editing needed.

Ivy Chen, the official photographer for Iwai Shunji's movies "All About Lily Chou-Chou" and "Hara to Arisu", said that when she played Weibird's song, her son who is only 2 years old, danced with the music. It shows although Weibird's voice is soft but it has strong affections. Therefore, she decided to use film instead of digital photography, with clever use of natural lighting, the outcome is unexpectedly good. The images look soft but dramatic, even Weibird's skin is not that good but there's almost no editing needed. He joked: "Is this the same standard as Yu Aoi? I'm really thankful to Ivy (the great photographer), for gracing me "

Weibird said, when he was doing photo shoot for debut album, he was too nervous that he kept frowning. But Ivy Chen kept encouraging him,  she said: "You really (behave) like my son". She didn't control his action/pose, and communicated with him using the way how she communicates with kid (eg. repeating some single word).

This made Weibird felt extremely safe(?) and relaxed. Weibird said with smile: "I didn't feel that I was doing photo shooting for album cover, I don't have keep smiling. It's like I was reading some books and having some fun there"

There will be 11 songs in Weibird's second album [Someone is Waiting], all composed by himself.

The first hit song "We'll Never Know" is being chosen by the company through twists and turns. Weibird said: "It's a song written just a few months after he had written [Have You Ever/You Mei You], I have been performing over hundred times in Live House, concert and practise, it's so hard to express the feelings when I was writting the song. This is the song has the most number of recordings". He also analysed, usually there will be 2 type of situations if a hit song can't be decided, first will be the content of album is bad, otherwise will be there are too many good songs. He is optimistic that his album is in the second situation. ^^
